Overview and Purpose

The Developments in Antimetabolite Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer satellite symposium is intended to familiarize participants with the biologic basis of antimetabolite chemotherapy, the results of clinical testing of optimal combinations and sequences using these agents, and the principles for properly applying these therapeutic strategies in defined clinical settings. The rationale for ongoing clinical trials and their early results will be reviewed in order to illustrate areas of uncertainty and steps being taken to answer critical questions. A case-based approach followed by a focused review of the recent literature covering optimal treatment approaches will be utilized. Audience interaction and a panel discussion will reinforce the learning experience and will allow participants to apply this information to their patient population.

Target Audience

This educational program is directed toward medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists practicing in the community or academic institutions. Fellows, oncology nurses, oncology physician assistants, and pharmacists who are interested in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to attend.

CME Accreditation and Credit Designation

Physicians: Physicians’ Education Resource is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians’ Education Resource designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA Category 1 CME credit for the PRA from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Review current data on the use of antimetabolites in the treatment of advanced breast cancer
  • Quantify the risk of recurrence and mortality and the projected benefit from various adjuvant chemotherapy regimens
  • Assess the relative merits of different adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens with regard to clinical/pathological response and long-term outcome
  • Describe the rationale for and pros/cons of neoadjuvant therapy and its role as a model of research for breast cancer therapy
  • Discuss the rationale for and clinical trial schemas of ongoing pivotal neoadjuvant and adjuvant trials
